We’ve been supporting groups campaigning against proposed new Thames road crossings at Silvertown, Gallions Reach and Belvedere. Outgoing Mayor Boris Johnson submitted plans for the Silvertown road tunnel in his final week in office, ironically on World Asthma Day! This controversial scheme will attract more heavy traffic and worsen air pollution in some of the city’s most densely populated neighbourhoods.
Before his election, the new Mayor of London Sadiq Khan promised to review Silvertown: we’re challenging him to keep his promise. Halting the new road crossings would free up billions of pounds to spend on greener transport instead.
The Mayor has made tackling air pollution an early priority with plans to expand the proposed Ultra Low Emission Zone, something we welcome; but cleaning up central London’s air while increasing pollution elsewhere in the capital is unacceptable.
