Obey the Highway Code and you’ll be abused and tailgated
Published: 26 May, 2016
• I RECENTLY acquired a car having not owned one since the 1970s.
My experience since again becoming a car owner is that drivers generally not only disregard the 20mph speed limit but also attempt to terrorise any driver who does observe it. When there is a 20mph speed limit I drive at 20mph but there are invariably drivers who either dangerously overtake me or tailgate my vehicle flashing their lights, sounding their horn and making obscene gestures. A driver recently came alongside me while waiting at traffic lights and threatened me with physical violence because I had been driving too slowly for their purposes – I had been travelling at 20mph in a 20mph zone.
There is no need in this letter to rehearse why 20mph is an appropriate speed limit. That case has already been made.
But there is clearly no enforcement and the result is that most drivers routinely flout it and many (not just a few) appear determined to intimidate any driver who does wish to observe the limit and, thereby, comply with the Highway Code.
