There will be no retreat on the modernisation programme for London’s roads despite the worsening congestion that has sharply reduced traffic speeds in the capital, the politician in charge of the issue has said.

The most recent congestion figures for London — for January to March this year — show that average daytime motor traffic speeds on the capital’s main roads were down 4 per cent on the same period in 2015, despite a 1.2 per cent decrease in motor traffic.
