Safer cycling in the UK needs your help.
On Monday 26 September the Government’s road safety campaign, THINK, turned its attention to the danger lorries present to cyclists, with its “Hang Back” video. It was rightly and widely condemned for blaming the victim and not addressing the root of the problem: the unsafe lorry.
Cycling UK had expressed our concerns before the campaign was launched, and wrote to the Minister responsible for cycling, Andrew Jones MP, subsequently asking for it to be pulled and offering our assistance to make a more balanced film.
We’ve since learned the THINK campaign believes its message is not victim blaming and sends the right message, and therefore will not drop the campaign.
In stark contrast to national Government’s attitude on the danger lorries pose walkers and cyclists, on Friday 30 September, London Mayor Sadiq Khan, rolled out a plan to drive unsafe lorries off London roads.
If you think London has it right and national Government needs to #THINKagain, then write to the Minister and ask him to pull the plug on the campaign and work with road safety organisations to send a message that will make a positive difference.
