Known as “the road to hell”, the M25 has long been Britain’s most hated motorway.
Now figures show that driving on London’s clogged orbital road is such a miserable experience it would be quicker to use a bicycle on the busiest sections.
The average speed of traffic on the northbound section of the motorway near Heathrow airport was just 13.7mph during the evening peak last month, according to an analysis by TomTom, the technology firm. This was down from 19mph during the same month in 2008.
There were no significant roadworks on that section of the M25 last month.
It means the average speed of vehicles travelling between junctions 14 and 15 is almost half the 27.8mph top speed of the world’s fastest man, Usain…
