BBC topical humour programme props up the ‘bike lash’.
Cyclists in lycra get ‘put in Room 101’.
References to ’two wheeled fascists’ received applause
There were attempts to separate ‘those on “Boris Bikes” and “those older bikes”- and, at least some reference was made in
support of having ‘car-free areas’ (though “for a mile and a half”!).
B/W footage of poet Philip Larkin visiting a peaceful village church on an ‘old-fashioned’ bicycle was shown to contrast how cycling was once perceived with a ‘current view’.
Cyclists in groups in the countryside (sports cyclists) were also condemned by the guest who, acknowledged his riding on a horse did not necessarily show him as someone justified too make such critical remarks˘
It might at least serve to widen the debate as to what all inclusive/mass cycling means – or looks like – though I think this weak-minded, dog-whistle-type hate-fuelling is not the best way of going about it.
Series 6: Episode 7
