Cap de Formentor lighthouse to only be accessed by foot, bicycle or tour busses.
The council of Mallorca and the council of Pollença, have recently reach an agreement to disallow access for private cars including rented cars, to the Cap de Formentor lighthouse.
From summer 2018, the only way to access this iconic and beautiful viewpoint of Mallorca, will be by walking, cycling or jump on a public shuttlebus from the new transit station down in Port de Pollença.
Cap de Formentor is still for everyone to enjoy
The mayor of Pollença, Miquel Àngel March, explained to us, that the reason of this limited access to the Cap de Formentor lighthouse, is to avoid chaotic situations and traffic jams on the narrow mountain roads. Especially during high season, the peninsula where Cap de Formentor lighthouse is located gets extremely crowded, with cars holding in line to move forward.
In this first try of the new access rules, only the Cap de Formentor lighthouse will be affected, even though other tourist attraction viewpoints such as Creueta, Cala Figuera and Cala des Cap de Formentor are all located around the very same peninsula. The mayor states, that he s aware of this and will be paying much attention to the outcome of this first action.
Not just Cap de Formentor
The counselor of territory and infrastructure, Mercedes Garrido, stated that Cap de Formentor is not the only area affected by heavy traffic during high season. Areas such as Sa Calobra (Escorca) and the road to Lluc (Escorca/Selva), are highly affected.
In order to find solutions for these issues, it is important to get a clear diagnose and some statistics of how many vehicles passes on a daily basis and how it would be possible to organize the traffic in these areas of Mallorca and Tramuntana.
The council of Mallorca will from 2018 also limit the access of coaches and tourist buses to a maximum of 35 per day, in areas like Cap de Formentor and Sa Calobra.
What do you think about this? How would you solve this delicate matter?
