Yearly official traffic counts tell us many useful things. Thanks to them, we know that 3.27 billion vehicle miles were cycled in 2017 (GB), around 3% more than in 2016.What counts don’t and can’t do, though, is interrogate cyclists on where they’re going and why, how frequent their trips are, or how far. Demographics, of course, are completely beyond them too.
This is the job of the Department for Transport’s (DfT) annual National Travel Survey (NTS).
