Guide for bereaved families of cyclists killed by HGVs
The threat posed to cyclists by lorries has been a priority for RoadPeace for several years. Many of our members and staff are cyclists and our current Chair became involved with RoadPeace after her daughter was killed cycling by a left turning lorry in the City of London.
We also see it as iconic. The risk of death and disability to the cyclist, few of whom will benefit from being insured and in any subsequent court proceedings (coroner, criminal or civil), the HGV driver, who is almost never injured in a collision, and company, will be represented by specialist barristers.
A London based HGV/Cyclist campaign group produced this Guide for families of cyclists killed by HGVs. The group consisted of representatives from London Cycling Campaign, CTC (Cyclist Touring Club), RoadPeace and Leigh Day and Co. Solicitors.
Drafts of the guide were circulated to participants of a Metropolitan Police working group looking into HGV-cyclist deaths but this should not be seen as an endorsement by any of the statutory organisations (MPS, Transport for London) or the fleet association representatives
