Dear [select a fund from above],
I am a member of the retirement assets managed by [select a fund from above]. I am writing to you regarding Exxon’s upcoming annual meeting of shareholders on May 31, 2017.
Please vote the shares owned by our fund FOR item 12 on Exxon’s proxy. Item 12 asks the company to publish an annual assessment of the long-term portfolio impacts of global climate change policies.
This proposal is long overdue and continued neglect on this file only puts the future success of the company at risk.
In December 2015, 195 nations reached an agreement to limit global average temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius. Currently, ExxonMobil has not presented any analysis to investors on how its portfolio will perform in a scenario where governments and regulators seek to reduce carbon emissions and transition toward a low-carbon economy.
Disclosing the resilience of the company’s portfolio under the 2-degree scenario is not only standard due diligence, major asset managers like BlackRock and State Street Global Advisors have aggressively called for improved climate risk disclosures. Adopting this resolution will prevent the company from falling behind its competitors.
Please write back to tell me how you plan to vote on this important issue and your reasoning for your vote. As someone whose retirement savings is managed by your fund, I am very interested in how my money is being invested.
