• A FEW years ago Camden introduced a 20mph speed limit for the vehicles using its roads. The worthy rationale behind this was to reduce injuries and deaths on our roads.
If it were enforced, the 20mph limit would make life safer, quieter, and less polluted for everyone in the borough. But given that it is not enforced, the measure represents nothing more than “me too” virtue signalling by the council – Islington having been the first London borough to introduce the limit.
Councillors, Camden officers, and the Met police consider there to be insufficient resources for enforcement. With the limit so generally ignored wouldn’t speed cameras be self-funding. These could also become a nice little earner for Camden?
