Campaigners want gardai to enforce safe passing distancesGETTY IMAGESLaws penalising drivers who overtake cyclists dangerously will only be effective if gardaí are properly trained in policing the new offence, a cycling campaign group has said.
In addition, an online portal should be created where cyclists can upload footage showing dangerous overtaking by a motorist so that it can be investigated, Phil Skelton, founder of the Stayin’ Alive at 1.5 campaign, said.
Mr Skelton founded the campaign group after being run off the road when cycling in 2013. He lobbied for the creation of a new law that would require motorists to pass cyclists at a distance of 1m clearance on roads with a speed limit under 50km/h and 1.5m on those of 50km/h or above.
