Meet at 10:00 at the Iverson Road entrance to West Hampstead Thameslink for the 10:14 train to Flitwick (10:07 from St Pancras) arriving 11.11. We’ll head east through pleasant countryside including a traffic-free section through Wrest Park and for lunch at the café attached to the Shuttleworth Collection, a museum with a splendid collection of Edwardian and between-the-wars aircraft. Entry to the airfield and the café is free, entry to the museum is £15 (£12 concessions). There are two options after lunch – spend an hour or two viewing the collection and take a short route back, or take a longer route back via Cardington (Grade 2* listed airship hangars that were the focus of the abortive British airship industry in the 1920s. Possibility of viewing the experimental Airlander 1, a modern take on the airship saga). Both groups will meet up for tea at St. Mary’s Church, Haynes Church End, before returning to Flitwick for the train back to London. Total distance 27 or 35 miles.
The route through Wrest Park provides a convenient alternative to riding on the A507 but it includes about 0.5 mile of very rough track. People with the narrowest tyres (24 mm or less) may prefer to walk the worst bits of it.
