Evaluating Cycling Injury Risk
Dr. Rachel Aldred will talk about new research on cycling injury risk in London. While many studies have looked at the characteristics of places where collisions take place, there is limited research that looks at risk per cyclist or per cycle km. This means that apparently ‘dangerous’ places may sometimes just have a lot of cyclists, while some risky places may have few injuries because few people cycle. The research gap exists partly because we don’t have much data on the amount of cycling on the network, so researchers need to gather a lot of new data. However, TfL’s cycle model makes it possible to look at where injuries take place in relation to where we think people are cycling, and so look at risk per cycle km. Our analysis using this data provides some new insights on the risk associated with different speeds limits, and with motor traffic volumes, as well as looking at the impact of ‘safety in numbers’ at a route level.
