Kilburn Vale Environmental Improvement

Dates: consultation 16 April 2003; reply due 16 June 2003; CCC member dealing with it Paul Gasson.

The plan consists of

extension of footway in Belsize Rd
new trees and new lighting
new layout of parking and loading bay (no substantial net increase of parking space) .

CCC’s response

While we generally welcome the proposed environmental improvements, we are very concerned that the plan does not in any way address the speed of vehicles on Belsize Rd opposite Kilburn Vale. We have observed that a large number of cars going West on Belsize Road travel at a dangerous speed. This is a threat to both pedestrians and cyclists especially considering the double curve of the road which reduces visibility. It is unlikely that the narrowing of road will reduce vehicles’ speed, while the wider pavements will encourage more pedestrians to cross at any point on the junction.. We therefore propose the construction of a raised speed table on Belsize Rd from the current pedestrian crossing to past Kilburn Vale Our support of the scheme is conditional to the construction of such raised speed table. This modification of the proposed plan would truly fulfil the Council’s aim to provide a more pleasant residential environment.
