Minutes of Camden Cycling Campaign Business Meeting on 13th September 2004
Present: Jane Boardman, James Brander, Stefano Casalotti, Jean Dollimore, Daniel Glaser (chair), Meade McCloughan (minutes) and Helen Vecht.
Apologies: David Arditti, Anne Boston, John Chamberlain, Andrew Conway and Paul Gasson.
Cycle Route Planning
• It was decided to devote October’s members meeting to thinking up routes to propose to the Council.
• We need to find out whether the Council has bid for funds for 2005-6 for new routes.
• Jean to contact Doug Amer and (i) ask him if there will be money for new routes next year and, if so, (ii) invite him to come and speak to the meeting on the process of route planning and implementation.
• If the Council has not put in for funds for new cycle routes, we will need to start putting pressure on councillors.
• Stefano to contact Oliver Schick (Hackney LCC) and invite him to the meeting – Oliver has experience of route planning and has said he would be willing to come along.
Car Free Day, Wednesday 22nd September
• Camden Council’s contribution to Car Free Day this year takes the form of the one-day road closure of Coptic Street WC1 (off Great Russell St, parallel to Museum Street). The northern end of Coptic Street will remain permanently closed after 22nd Sept provided that the TMO goes through.
• There will be events for children between 11 am and 3 pm, cycle training etc.
• Stefano is organising a CCC stall and various people have volunteered to help out.
• James has some leaflets & maps etc, which Stefano can collect if he doesn’t get to LCC.
Report on LCC Borough Co-ordinators Meeting
• LCC’s AGM will be held on Wednesday, 13th October in SE1.
• The deadline for nominations for ‘best cycling facility’ is the 17th September. James is to nominate the new Crogsland Road facility.
• LCC wants information on bus conflict hotspots. Stefano to publicize on the newsgroup.
• Bike Week 2005 will be 11th – 19th June. There are also plans for a ‘schools bike week’ 18th – 22nd April (not yet confirmed).
• The issue of the formal relation between LCC and the borough groups should be resolved soon.
• We have still not yet received our grant from LCC – James is chasing this.
Cycling and the workplace
• Stefano and Andrew continue to press on with this initiative.
Pedestrian issues
• The Council is to produce a leaflet discouraging pavement cycling and has agreed that this should not be entirely negative.
• CCC committee members will be able to comment on the proposed text of this leaflet and will only endorse it if it is acceptable.
• The Council will also want us to help distribute the leaflet – by including it in with the newsletter mail-out?
• Various slogans have been put forward on the newsgroup – Stefano and James will sift through these and forward the best ones onto Christopher Nicola at the Council.
• The Council is also applying for funds from Transport for London to create an anti-pavement cycling officer post (!). Presumably, such a officer would also do more positive things.
Cycling and the workplace
• Stefano and Andrew continue to press on with this initiative.
Website
• We need more material on ‘campaigning’ and ‘how you can get involved’.
• Jean to ask Paul Gasson if we could use his leaving speech (March meeting) as the basis for a historical perspective on campaigning.
• Stefano to draft a list of current (and lapsed) campaigns.
• Jane to draft a text on ‘how you can get involved’.
