King’s Cross Area – Cycle Permeability Improvements

Dates: consultation Nov 11, 2011; reply due Dec 9, 2011. Decision by Dec 23, 2011 Officer: Raymond Cheng, Simi Shah. CCC member dealing with it Jean Dollimore. Replied 30 Nov 2011; agreed 13 Jan; officers report available via consultation link

At last we have a consultation on a scheme for two-way cycling in all of the one way streets between Euston Road, Judd Street, Sidmouth Street and Gray’s Inn Road. If you live in the area, please respond in favour; this is something that we have worked for over several years and locals are a bit suspicious of cyclists being allowed to go the ‘wrong way’.

LB Camden proposes to introduce two-way cycling in the following roads in King Cross

– Argyle Street

– Belgrove Street

-Crestfield Street

– St Chad’s Street

– Argyle Square

–  Bidborough Street

– Hastings Street

– Tonbridge Street

– Regent Square

– Seaford Street

These schemes will be using minimal engineering measures (i.e. signs and carriageway markings). And if anyone asks, there will be no new kerbs

CCC’s response

It is almost exactly three years since we presented LB Camden with a case for cyclists exceptions in quiet one-way streets and provided a list of suggestions for suitable locations, concentrating mainly on the area south of Euston Road.

We are therefore very pleased to see this consultation on a scheme for two-way cycling in all of the one way streets between Euston Road, Judd Street, Sidmouth Street and Gray’s Inn Road.

Please would let me know as soon as you know the result of this consultation. In addition, please would you make sure that we are shown the design drawings before the scheme is implemented.

 Results

All the above were agreed apart from Bidborough Street, Hastings Street and Tonbridge Street (all on grounds of being less than 4 metres wide).

The officer’s report is excellent.

Implementation in March 2012.
