The Italian government will offer a 70-per-cent subsidy, capped at 500 euros (US$540 dollars), for people who buy a new bicycle or electric scooter or sign up to bike and scooter sharing services.
May 11–ROME — The Italian government will offer a 70-per-cent subsidy, capped at 500 euros (US$540 dollars), for people who buy a new bicycle or electric scooter or sign up to bike and scooter sharing services.
Transport Minister Paola De Micheli said Monday that the measure would be part of a forthcoming 55-billion-euro stimulus package for Italy’s virus-stricken economy.
Speaking via video conference to journalists from the Foreign Press Association, De Micheli said the decree would be approved “between today and tomorrow.”
The subsidy will be limited to residents of larger cities with at least 50,000 inhabitants, and is aimed at supporting green mobility in Italy’s post-lockdown phase.
The minister noted that due to social-distancing requirements, far fewer people will be able to take buses and trains, forcing them to consider alternative ways of commuting like cycling.
The government is also planning changes in the highway code to make it easier for local authorities to create new bike lanes, De Micheli said.
