Camden are consulting on a major upgrade to the York Way/Agar Grove/Brewery Road junction. The proposal, which is supported by Islington, would link to the existing cycle lanes on York Way. The diagram shows that pedestrians can cross on their desire line on the four sides of the junction while cycles going ahead or turning right use a route inside the pedestrian crossings – including one diagonal route. Pedestrians would cross the cycle lanes using zebra crossings before waiting to cross the main traffic lanes.
This clever arrangement (which is similar to that used on Lea Bridge Road in Waltham Forest) allows cycles approaching from all four directions and pedestrians waiting on all four arms to get green signals at the same time and to proceed through the junction without conflict with one another.
In two further separate stages (when cycles and pedestrians have red signals) the north<->south motor vehicles and then the east<->west motor vehicles are allowed to cross the junction. Cycles approaching the junction are allowed to turn left at all times.

In addition, the existing zebra crossing of Agar Grove would be upgraded to a parallel crossing to give access to and from the quiet streets to the north (Marquis Road and Cantelowes Road) and hence a connection to Camden Square and the C50 route between Camden and Finsbury Park.
Traffic counts carried out in July 2025 on York Way, just north of the junction, recorded an average of 8,600 motor vehicles and 1,900 people cycling per day – this is a very busy junction and the proposed changes will make a big difference.
This is a significant and innovative proposal and we will be supporting it strongly.
