South End Road & Cressy Road
Consultation on:
Additional bus standing space for route 168
In partnership with Transport for London, the Borough of Camden is improving bus routes within the borough to make bus travel a more attractive means of transport. As part of this programme, we are proposing measures to increase stand capacity from 1 bus to 2 buses for route 168.
The situation at present is such that the existing stand cannot accommodate more than one bus safely. This in turn creates problems for traffic using Pond Street and South End Green.
FaberMaunsell produced a feasibility report with 13 options to provide additional stand space in the area. These were reported to the Environment Sub Group Committee on 16th December 2003 and 4 options were put forward for consultation.
- Sharing stand space with current Route 24 at South End Green,
– Increasing capacity at the existing Route 168 stand,
– A new stand in Cressy Road outside the Ambulance Station, and
– Do nothing.
Further design work on the options was carried out. The designs were also safety audited to determine at an early stage any problems that required specif remedy. This was reported to the Environment Sub Group Committee on 18th May 2004 and the option for sharing the existing Route 24 stand was removed from the options for consultation.
Option 1 Extending existing bus stand on South End Road
Option 2 Relocate bus stand to Cressey Road
(See drawing overleaf for details)
CCC’s response
After some debate, Camden Cycling Campaign decided with some dissent that it can consider other impacts than just the cyclists’ angle, to the exclusion of all other factors.
So, taking into account that South End Green is a place where people congregate – even sitting outside cafes on the pavement, the presence of two large buses standing right in front of them in a narrow road is detrimental to the environment. Of course a lot more needs to be done in terms of traffic reduction to make South End Green really pleasant, but that isn’t an argument for making it worse.
On the other hand, the spot outside the Ambulance Station in Cressy Road is well out of the way. Considering the layout of the roads, I think that there are unlikely to be southbound cyclists on this section of Cressy Road
