The council is planning to make changes to Chalk Farm Roadas part of a Local Safety Scheme
. This is not a formal consultation, but in essence advance notification of the works which are due to start in in Jan 2004. CCC has not been consulted on these changes; the council is apparently allowed to undertake this nominal information exercise for Local Safety Schemes
.
The changes which are most likely to adversely impact cyclists are:
New refuge island in Chalk Farm Road near Belmont Street junction
Widening refuge island & creating a zebra crossing in Chalk Farm Road near Harmood Street junction.
CCC’s response
The changes which are most likely to adversely impact cyclists are:
New refuge island in Chalk Farm Road near Belmont Street junction
Widening refuge island (as part of the new zebra crossing) in Chalk Farm Road near the Harmood Street junction.
These measures may result in cyclists being pinched
by motor vehicles, so we do not recommend that these measures are implemented without consideration of cyclists’ needs.
If the council does proceed with these measures we strongly recommend that the cyclist casualties at these locations are closely monitored so that remedial measures can be swiftly implemented.
