CCC’s response
We fail to see how this is going to work: how will widening the pavement, with no loss of parking, create a wider road, as you state?! It simply doesn’t make sense. With vehicles parked on the new inset parking bays or not, buses wanting to pass will still face the same difficulties. (The examples shown are adjacent to much wider carriageways.) The only answer is to remove parking altogether.
We have some concerns that inset parking bays may pose problems for cyclists. With motorists parked on the pavement, they and their passengers may be less careful about opening doors, thereby endangering cyclists proceeding along what is a narrow carriageway.
We consider that the consultation questions are inadequate: we are in favour of some pavement widening here, but not its use for inset parking bays. The questions do not allow for this kind of preference to be registered, and we have therefore been obliged to return a “No” response.
