Camden Council is consulting on six zebra crossings. They will build first those that are most popular. This one is on walking route to Parliament Hill and Hampstead Heath.

The council offers two options:

  • zebra north of junction with Millfield lane
  • zebra south of junction with Langbourne Avenue

CCC’s response

We support the installation of a Zebra crossing on Highgate West Hill. We note that Highgate West Hill is on a recently upgraded LCN+ strategic cycling route.

We prefer Option 2 (north of the junction with Millfield Lane) because:

  1. Cyclists travelling uphill and turning into Millfield Lane as signalled on LCN+ route 6a will find it easier to negotiate the junction and not have to stop at a steep and awkward part of the road.
  2. Traffic travelling downhill will be slowed earlier due to the extension of the raised area and presence of the zebra, improving the safety at this point, especially for cyclists exiting Millfield Lane.

Incidentally, we note that Option 2 involves less loss of residents’ parking.
