Camden Council has used Greenways funding to build a wheel channel at the side of the steps up to Savernake Bridge. The work was supervised by Hannah Brown. Children from Gospel Oak school designed posters to illustrate the purpose of the wheel channel, which is to persuade people not to cycle on the existing ramp. But the wheel channel will also assist cyclists who normally carry bikes up/down the steps and it is much quicker to use the new channel than the ramp.
The photos show some of the children from the school demonstrating how to use the wheel channel and the little girl who won the poster design which was selected to be turned into the durable banner.
The channel was opened by Paul Braithwaite on 1st July 2009.
It is to be hoped that City of London who manage Hampstead Heath will now give permission for cyclists to ride on the short length of path from the bridge onto the nearby cycle path on the Heath.
