John Chamberlain led the first feeder ride of 100 adults and children on bikes from Swiss Cottage to the Skyride circuit. Stefano Casalotti led a second group of about 50. We were very impressed with the stamina of the many small children who rode to the centre of London and back as well as riding on the car free circuit. John and Stefano took about 60 people back to Camden in the afternoon.
The event was well organised – our route to the Skyride was signed up all the way and marshalls were waiting on street corners to make sure we didn’t get lost. Unfortunately, the promised ride marshalls for the 10.30 ride didn’t appear, but some useful volunteers were able to take the role.
The ride circuit was larger than in the previous two years, running from Buckingham Palace to Tower Hill with a loop by St Pauls cathedral. Some fantastical bikes appeared just as we got to St Pauls. It was great to see so many people able to enjoy the car-free roads in the City – particularly exciting was the ride through the underpass where we were all encouraged to make a noise. And we saw so many views that are generally inaccessible.
