Following about a score of casualties, Camden Council proposes to impose a 20 mph limit controlled by 20 mph average speed cameras on Fitzjohns Avenue between Maresfield Gardens and Lyndhurst Road.

They also propose raised entry treatments at Belsize Park and Belsize Lane.
So that schools can commission an bus service (with a view to reducing the private car school run), they propose bus bays at five schools.

CCC’s response

The Camden Cycling Campaign has been campaigning for a long time asking for improvements on Fitzjohn’s Avenue and in the past, together with local residents , we have made some very innovative proposals for this road. The present plan from LB Camden represents a step in the right direction.

We are pleased that 20 mph limit will be introduced and enforced by an average speed cameras and we support the idea of providing facilities for school buses. The only measure we are concerned about is the removal of the ‘keep clear’ marking. We believe these should be retained but the school buses should be exempted from them.

While the proposed measures may increase bus usages by school children and reduce car usage, we feel that they will not sufficiently encourage bicycle usage. We therefore hope that LB Camden will continue to consider the possibility of introducing a segregated cycle lane at least in the uphill direction.
