Camden Council proposes to allow two-way cycling on the north side of Bedford Square. Cyclists will ride on the existing bound gravel area adjacent to the road. The following measures are proposed:

  • cycle logos on York stone paving in the existing bound gravel area
  • a short stretch of marked cycle lane on the approach to Bayley Street.
  • at the Gower Street junction: a new ASL on Gower Street and s short entry plug into Bedford Square.

CCC’s response

We are very pleased that at last, two-way cycling will be available in Bedford Square. As you know, we asked for this before the urban realm regeneration scheme in Bedford Square in 2005 and were very disappointed that it was rejected at that stage.

Now that two-way cycling is soon to be available in Percy Street and Bayley Street, Bedford Square forms the missing link in a route from Montague Place to Charlotte Street. Therefore this proposal for Bedford Square is very welcome.

As to the details of the scheme: although it would have been better to remove the parking on the north side of the road so that contraflow cyclists can use the road, the proposed solution is what was recommended in the CRISP for Link 30.
