The Big Ride 28 April 2012

The ride was organised so as to show mayoral and GLA candidates that London Cyclists want to go Dutch.

The Camden group met up at Swiss Cottage for the feeder ride which set off soon after 10 am flying the little LCC flags on our bikes. It was an easy ride with nearly as many marshals as other riders. We arrived at the meeting point in Hyde Park well before 11 am. We stood around in the rain, drinking warming coffee and chatting with riders from other groups. Gradually the park seemed to fill up with an assortment of colourfully dressed riders and imaginatively decorated bikes.

We eventually set off soon after noon and after the rather hazardous crossing over Park Lane entered the cordoned off southbound side and rode in peace without any distracting motor vehicles. The pace was slow due to the very large numbers and the need to stop at the pedestrian crossings. We headed down Piccadilly and then down Regent Street and on to Trafalgar Square. It was a long ride down Whitehall and then we swung left onto Victoria Embankment.

The ride came to an end close to the Blackfriars underpass. LCC reported that 10,000 riders had taken part even though it was the wettest imaginable day.
