Camden Council propose to improve the pedestrian facilities on Highgate West Hill, beside ‘The Green’. This will enable people to walk to and through The Green between St Michael’s Church and The Grove.
Currently the green is surrounded by a fence and there’s nowhere to walk round its edge.
The following measures are proposed:
1. Construct new footpath around part of The Green .
2.Provide unobstructed crossing point for pedestrians on the west side of Highgate West Hill by removing the parking bay at this location.
3.Improve pedestrian crossing facilities across the link road between The Flask PH and the new footpath around The Green by widening the footpath on the corner outside The Flask and providing dropped kerbs.
4.Convert the link road outside The Flask PH from two-way to one-way traffic eastbound.
5.Relocate 4 parking spaces to facilitate the changes.
Option 1 includes a footway buildout on West Hill and Option 2 does not.

CCC’s response
We note that the link road outside the Flask is to be made a one-way street. This would be reducing options for cyclists movements unless you leave it two-way for cycling. Please would you include that in your final design.
We support the other proposals (1, 2, 3 and 4) to construct the new footpaths round the Green, remove obstructions close to crossing and relocate parking spaces.
We prefer Option 1 to Option 2 because the build out will provide a better view for pedestrians and should not cause a pinchpoint because it is in line with the parking bays.
