Camden Council proposes improvements in Chester Road and Raydon Street close to their junction (in streets near the new housing development). The proposals include the following:
– Chester Road / Raydon Street junction take the three zebra crossings away from the island, moving one of them to outside Brookfield School.
– Road narrowing and raised crossing in Raydon Street outside the playground
– Road narrowing in Croftdown Road outside the entrance to infants playground of Brookfield School
– Road narrowing in Chester Road outside the housing development next to bus stop.

CCC’s response
I am writing on behalf of Camden Cycling Campaign, the local borough group of London Cycling Campaign (LCC). We have over 600 members and represent the interests of cyclists living or working in the borough of Camden. We consulted our members by email on this issue and this response reflects the views of the membership.
Following the meeting on-site this morning, it is clear that there are some local objections to the changes to the central island, but, in terms of cycling, the widening of the pavement in front of the new development and the re-siting of the zebra across Chester Road, do not pose a problem.
Proposal 1: installing a new zebra crossing outside Brookfield School Junior entrance in Chester Road: you confirmed this will be on an existing raised table; we discussed whether it might be moved closer to the Junior school gates, which might suit children coming out of those gates, but even if this can’t be done it will not pose a problem for cyclists. The sight-lines along this section of Chester Road aren’t wonderful for traffic coming round the corner from the direction of the library and the new development.
Proposal 2: wasn’t discussed this morning; no obvious problems for cyclists.
Proposal 3: narrowing Croftdown Road by entrance to Infants Playground: it’s a pity that there isn’t enough money to put in a raised table to slow traffic, but I accept that the existing speed hump may be sufficient.
Proposal 5: narrowing Chester Road at bus stop: this road is already so narrow that cyclists can’t squeeze past buses or vans. A speed cushion here will be removed, but there’s one further along.
