Following last year’s ‘Healthy School Streets’ event, is this year’s ‘Safe Routes to School’ seminar, hosted by Caroline Russell, Green Party London Assembly Member.
We’ll be hearing on how we can create streets and spaces that enable safe active travel for children and young people, with presentations from Prof. Peter Kraftl and Dr Sophie Hadfield-Hill ( authors of ‘Children Living in Sustainable Built Environments‘) and Allison Dutoit of Gehl Architects.
Dr. Rachel Aldred, University of Westminster, will briefly present the Department for Transport-funded Propensity to Cycle Tool (www.pct.bike), which now contains a travel-to-school layer for identifying areas, routes, and schools with high potential for cycling to work, before we come together to discuss how we can put young people’s health and wellbeing at the heart of our communities.

Allison Dutoit
With Gehl Architects, Allison has held various roles leading strategy and urban design projects. Formerly Head of Studio (now known as Design Team), she combines her role as Senior Consultant with research and teaching at the University of West England, Bristol. Her particular interest is in housing and neighbourhoods, and cycling strategies.
Dr Sophie Hadfield-Hill
Sophie Hadfield-Hill is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Birmingham. Principally a Children’s Geographer, Sophie’s expertise is children and young people’s everyday experiences of urban change in diverse contexts. Her research portfolio spans young people’s lives in the UK, India and Brazil; she has been Principal and Co-Investigator on numerous research projects related to urban transformation. Sophie is currently Chair of the RGS-IBG Geographies of Children, Youth and Families research group.
Professor Peter Kraftl
Peter Kraftl is Professor of Human Geography at the University of Birmingham. He is also Honory Professor at the School of Education, RMIT, Australia. His research focuses on children and young people’s everyday lives. As a geographer, he is interested in how children belong (or not) in places, how they move about, and how places are linked to their senses of identity. He has undertaken research with children and young people on a diverse range of topics, including play, school design, outdoor learning and their engagements with natural spaces.
