Camden proposes to close the slip road on the west side of South End Green (SEG) to motor traffic (allowing two-way cycling); the bus stand for 168 bus will be relocated on the loop on the other side of the Green. A streatery will be included in the slip road.
Pedestrian crossings at the main intersection (South End Road/Pond Street/ Fleet Road/ Constantine Road). Currently, there are zebra crossings from three of the corners to an island in the middle allowing three of the four roads to be crossed in two stages. The new proposal is to place straight-over pedestrian crossings on Fleet Road and Constantine Road and to replace the informal crossing over South End Road with a new zebra crossing. But pedestrians need a crossing over Pond Street close to the junction (rather than having to walk up the hill to cross)
Bus stands and stops: The loop road opposite the east side of SEG currently provides bus stands and allows access to private properties in South End Close. Camden proposes that the buses and access motor vehicles should go through in a westerly direction (i.e. in reverse from the current practice). They also propose that all of the buses (24, 46 and C11) should use the same stop (on Constantine Road) which will be lengthened and moved eastward to make room for the new zebra crossing – no bus stops in the loop road.
Cycling:
- the two-way cycle link through the slip road is a useful link between Pond Street and South End Road. But the right turns require some form of assistance. Would it be possible to add Tigers to the zebras currently close to those junctions or failing that place a refuge?
- why not any other provision for cycling? The cycle desire lines at this junction are:
- Fleet Road- Pond Street (turn left onto a hill, marked lane to bus stop)
- Fleet road – South End Road (left hook risk – marked cycle lane across junction with approach lane in Fleet Road)
- Pond Street – Constantine Road (give way, left hook risk – ???)
- South End Road – Constantine Road (might be cut in – protected lane on approach and round corner?)
The two other turns (Pond Street – South End Road and South End Road – Pond Street) can be done via the slip road

Our suggestions to avoid potential collisions at the main junction:
- mark a 2-way cycle lane through slip road (instead of shared space) – the road does look well separated from the footway
- convert zebras on Pond Street and South End Road to Tigers – both shown on post-consultation drawing
- create new Tiger between Pond Street and Constantine Road nearer to the latter – only a zebra
- could use Cressy Contarflow if implemented which it has been
