Covent Garden

Camden and Westminster are consulting jointly on making the changes to the roads in the Covent Garden area permanent. Dates: Consultation 14th November 2022 to 16th December 2022. Reply to: CGengagement@westminster.gov.uk; CCC member dealing with it: John Chamberlain. Responded 15th December 2022; Decision 7th March 2023

Camden and Westminster are consulting jointly on making the changes to the roads in the Covent Garden area permanent. The changes were made in December 2021 as an experiment following consultations in August-September. The scheme extended and modified Camden’s existing scheme for Seven Dials and is designed to reduce motor traffic in the area.

At the time we supported the principle of closing roads to through traffic and encouraged the increase in cycle permeability through allowing two-way cycling on most of the roads but we objected to the failure to close some of the rat-runs which impact roads such as Endell Street and Great Queen Street, both of which are busy pedestrian and cycle routes. You can see our response here.

We will put in another response, supporting the principle but re-iterating our previous concerns and adding any suggestions from members,
