Paris Votes To Triple SUV Parking Costs Angelique Chrisafis – theguardian.com 4 Feb 2024
In a referendum on Sunday, which was closely watched by other capital cities, including London, Parisians voted to triple parking costs for SUVs, to tackle air pollution, climate breakdown, road safety and imposing a “form of social justice”, by targetting rich drivers in heavy, large and polluting cars.
Kerbside parking for an SUV or 4×4 car will rise to €18 (£15) an hour in the centre and €12 an hour elsewhere in Paris: applied to ICE or or hybrid vehicles weighing over 1.6 tonnes, E cars above 2 tonnes.

Active Travel Interventions: Behaviour & Health Impacts Rachel Aldred; Anna Goodman; James Woodcock
New paper in Journal of Transport & Health: Impacts of active travel interventions on travel behaviour & health shows results from 5yr travel survey in Outer London.
Highlights:
- Uses 6 years of longitudinal data to examine impacts of active travel infrastructure in Outer London
- Finding a strong and consistent dose-response relationship between infrastructure and uptake
- Some evidence of reduced car ownership and/or use in the areas with most interventions
- Programme generates over £1bn health economic benefits for a programme cost of £100m
- Low Traffic Neighbourhoods may have very high value for money (as much as 50:1 to 200:1)

School Streets: Feedback Needed Two new School Streets were put in last July: for St Christopher’s School in Belsize Lane and Maria Montessori in Lyndhurst Gardens.
Camden Council is now asking for feedback via Commonplace.
ANPR cameras haven’t yet been installed (awaited by Camden Council) – but there is also a need to connect the two School Streets to the cycle lane on Haverstock Hill by extending the School Streets area all along Belsize Lane between Lyndhurst Gardens and Haverstock Hill.
Please spare a moment and put in this suggestion via at least one of the links below:

From London To New York: Can Quitting Cars Be Popular? Despite ongoing pushback, cities worldwide are continuing efforts to reduce traffic by encouraging drivers to switch to greener transport.
India Bourke – bbc.com
Riding the car-reduction curve
The need for change in US urban centres is quite literally in the air. [Exhaust] emissions are akin to “wildfires that are happening on our own streets”, said New York’s governor Kathy Hochul in a press conference celebrating the congestion charge’s federal approval.“Working hours lost sitting in traffic equate to around $20bn [£15.8bn] a year––a complete waste.”
Reforms elsewhere suggest that, despite initial resistance, car reduction plans steadily gain public acceptance in the long run.

One participant’s response:
“As well as making me feel welcome, they helped fix the problems with my bike and I learnt a few things as well.
This is a really good initiative and it takes the stress off doing the mechanics. Plus it makes my cycling a lot safer, now the brakes are working properly. It felt like I was cycling on a brand new bike this morning 🙂 “
