Camden are consulting on further improvements to Red Lion Street. These would include:
- Extending the ban on motor vehicles further south as far as Sandland Street
- Widening the footways on Red Lion and Sandland Streets
- A continuous pavement across Red Lion Street at the junction with Holborn, See example here.
- A raised crossing outside number 71
- New benches, trees and other planting
- Additional cycle stands
- Extending the dockless bike hire bay to make more room and keep them off the footway
- An additional cycle hangar for long-term storage
- Remove/relocate some parking and loading bays
Red Lion Street forms part of a key N-S cycle route (C41), which connects Holborn and Euston, and the recent motor traffic restrictions have made a massive difference to the safety and ease of cycling in the area, as well as improving the environment for pedestrians, visitors and residents. Jean Dollimore wrote about this and detailed the improvements here.
The current proposals are more to do with improving the streetscape but there are positive elements for cycling too. However, as Jean says in her post, Camden should take steps to close the remaining northbound rat runs between High Holborn and Theobalds Road entering the area at Red Lion Street and leaving via Red Lion Street, Bedford Row or Jockey’s Fields.
