This is a significant and long-awaited scheme and is fully consistent with Camden’s Transport Strategy and the 2025-2028 Delivery Plan.
On Fitzjohn’s Avenue the proposals include:
- 900m of new, mostly 2m wide, segregated cycle lane (uphill direction), linking to existing and proposed cycle routes to the east and west.
- Improved junctions including continuous footways at Belsize Park, College Crescent, Belsize Lane, Maresfield Gardens, Nutley Terrace, Akenside Road and Netherhall Gardens.
- Parallel crossings (pedestrians + cycles) near Nutley Terrace, Belsize Park, Maresfield Terrace and outside St Mary’s school, also on Lyndhurst Road east of the junction with Akenside Road.
- 10 new cycle hangars
- Dockless hire bike bays
- Planting and greening (rain gardens)
There would also be changes to the location of bus stops and removal of some parking. There would be two bus-stop bypasses on the northbound (uphill) side of the road.
Camden further state that they continue to work with TfL to seek improvements to the Swiss Cottage gyratory at the southern end of the scheme.
Other proposed changes in the area include:
Heath Street
- Continuous pavements across junctions
- Changes to bus stop and loading bay locations to improve bus travel times
College Crescent between Finchley Road and Fitzjohn’s Avenue
- A Healthy School Street (motor traffic banned between 7:45am – 8:45am and 2:45pm – 4:15pm, Monday to Friday during UCS school term times)
- Two-way cycling
- Reversal of the one-way system for motor vehicles

Please respond in favour and support the use of bus-stop bypasses as the safest way for cycles to pass bus-stops. And ask Camden to work with TfL to sort out the Swiss Cottage gyratory.
