This is the consultation on the first stage of the much discussed improvements in Royal College Street. See the background. It covers the part south of Randolph Street.
Camden Council proposes to improve cyclists safety and convenience and reduce the speed of motor vehicles. The changes include the following measures:
– a 2 m wide cycle track on each side of the road (southbound on the east and northbound on the west side)
– a single motor vehicle lane
– lightweight separators: planters between the cycle track and the road, special separators between cycle track and car oarking
– raised tables at the junctions
– removal of the signals at Georgiana Street

I am writing on behalf of Camden Cycling Campaign, the local borough group of London Cycling Campaign (LCC). We have over 600 members and represent the interests of cyclists living or working in the borough of Camden. We consulted our members by email on this issue and this response reflects the views of the membership.
Camden Cycling Campaign very strongly supports this scheme and all of the measures required to carry it out. We believe that although the existing track provides an excellent example of Dutch style infrastructure, the new one, with its extra width and improved safety is going to be even better. We are attracted to the idea that the use of the cheaper lightweight separators will enable the rolling out more schemes of this sort. In particular, we are very keen to see the extension of the scheme to the rest of Royal College Street.
We note that the consultation drawing does not show a table across the junction with Baynes Street. We discussed this with you at a meeting and feel it is essential to reduce the speeds of the vehicles emerging and turning right up Royal College Street. It will also enhance access to the ramp down to the canal.
