In the first two days of January, the average Briton was already responsible for more carbon dioxide emissions than someone from the Democratic Republic of the Congo would produce in an entire year, according to analysis by the Center for Global Development (CGD).
The study, which highlights the “vast energy inequality” between rich and poor countries, found that each Briton produces 200 times the climate emissions of the average Congolese person, with people in the US producing 585 times as much. By the end of January, the carbon emitted by someone living in the UK will surpass the annual emissions of citizens of 30 low- and middle-income countries, it found.
TV naturalist Chris Packham has urged people in Norfolk to join protest action against plans for the £198m Norwich Western Link road.

Despite several recent newspaper stories decrying revisions to the Highway Code—the U.K. road safety manual first published in 1931—the U.K.’s main motoring organizations are in favor of the changes.
“Drivers turning into a road should now give way to any pedestrians waiting to cross,” said RAC’s head of roads policy Nicholas Lyes.
He added that changes such as these—which come into force on Saturday—are to be welcomed and “should make the roads safer for the most vulnerable road users, in particular those walking and cycling.”

A new net-zero report, commissioned by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, outlines several actions that will be required to reduce air pollution, tackle the climate emergency and cut congestion in the U.K. capital by 2030. One of them could be congestion charging on steroids: road pricing.
Khan said the report, published on January 18, must act as a wake-up call for the U.K. government, which he stressed, needs to provide greater support for London to reach net-zero by 2030.

100 years ago, Henry Ford was known for his strident fascism. His fascist publications were distributed in car dealerships across the US, Hitler awarded him the highest Nazi honor, and he had a vision of car-dominated cities so naturally, 100 years later …

One current option is to Introduce a Greater London boundary charge, which would charge a small fee to non-London registered vehicles entering Greater London, responding to the increase in cars from outside London travelling into the city seen in recent years
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has set a target for London to be net zero carbon by 2030. A “new kind of road user charging system” could be one of the solutions, he has announced, based on new analysis.
In order to reduce transport emissions by anywhere close to the amount required to clean up London’s air, achieve net-zero targets and cut congestion, the capital will have to see a significant shift away from petrol and diesel vehicle use and towards walking and cycling, greater…
