CCC’s response
For each of the above proposed locations, replied yes
to the question: “Do you agree with the proposal to introduce a cycle hire docking station on this location?”
Then added the comments below to the appropriate questionnaire
CCC believes that Bayley Street is an important location for a Cycle Hire Station, as it is in a central area and likely to attract users.
CCC believes that Bedford Way is an important location for a Cycle Hire Station, as it the only one that is closer to Russell Square – it would be better if it could be even closer.
CCC believes Brunswick Square is an important location for a Cycle Hire Station, as it is convenient for the Renoir Cinema and the Brunswick Centre.
CCC believes that Byng Place is probably the most important location for a Cycle Hire Station, as it is at the centre of the university complex. The document mentions moving trees: we hope that this will not be objected to. It also mentions footway widening – is that really true?
CCC believes that Calthorpe Street an important location for a Cycle Hire Station, as there isn’t another proposed in the Phoenix Place, Cubitt Street, Gough Street Mount Pleasant area. Even if there are some on the other side of Farringdon Road, it would be a barrier to cross.
CCC believes that Cartwright Gardens an important location for a Cycle Hire Station, as it is close to student residences. Really there should be one near to the British Library. It is a pity that the fear of serving the mainline railway stations has left the area nearby seriously deprived.
The area here would be quite well provided if both these sites and the other one in Charlotte Street are implemented as well as the one in Howland Street. So taking into account that not all proposed locations will be implemented, one of these two could be omitted.
Although other hire stations are proposed in Charlotte Street (and Scale Street), this one will be very useful as it is close to Goodge Street. There appear to be none south of Goodge Street and west of Tottenham Court Road (in Camden). This one should be kept.
CCC believes that Doric Way is an important location for a Cycle Hire Station, as it is close to Euston Station. It is a pity that the fear of serving the mainline railway stations has left the area around St Pancras seriously deprived.
CCC believes that Drummond Street (like Doric Way) is an important location for a Cycle Hire Station, as it is close to Euston Station. People coming off trains will need bikes.
CCC believes that this site in Drury Lane is an important location for a Cycle Hire Station, as it is there don’t appear to any others in the Camden part of Covent Garden. Unfortunately we don’t know the locations of the sites in Westminster, but Lincolns Inn Fields seems to need a Hire Station.
The proposed location in Earnshaw Street is rather out of the way. It will require signage if people are to find it.
The proposed location in Endsleigh Gardens and the two in Gower Place should be very useful being near to both UCL and UCLH.
The proposed location in Guilford Street is important. It’s close to the National Hospital and in addition, there are no other hire stations between Guilford Street and Theobalds Road (apart from the one in Northington Street which is rather far east.
Regarding the proposed location in Harrison Street. This is very close to the one in Sidmouth Street. Although one of them would be essential, it’s not really necessary to keep both.
The proposed location in Hatton Garden (south) is important. It is a better location than Brookes market (the only other one nearby). Without this one, there would be a severe shortage on the south east corner of Camden.
We believe that the proposed location in Hatton Garden north is important. Even if it does involve loss of pay and display bays, this location is needed. There isn’t another close to the Camden side of Farringdon Road.
Station 51. High Holborn (south side close to Kingsway) – an good location being on a main street and in a visible place.
Station 55. High Holborn (near Museum Street) another good location being on a main street and in a visible place.
CCC believes that Malet Street (like Byng Place) is a very important location for a Cycle Hire Station, as it is at the centre of the university complex.
The Montague Place location is important: it’s the only one that’s reasonbly close to the British Museum. This is particularly for people coming from the north. The one on the junction of High Holborn and Museum Street would be useful for people coming from the south.
The Northington Street location is essential. It is the only location on Grays Inn Road, south of Guilford Street.
The two hire stations in Pancras Road might be used by passengers arriving at St Pancras Thameslink or Midland Mainline stations. Really they should be sited nearer to the stations.
The hire station in Great Russell Street is important – it will be useful for visitors to Tottenham Court Road and for people at the YMCA hostel.
The two hire stations at Sidmouth St and Ampton Street are quite close together . We need one in this area, but two would probably be excessive at this first stage.
The proposed location in St Chad’s Street is a very useful one: it is the only one anywhere near to Kings Cross Station. Without it, there would be a severe shortage in the Judd Street area.
The proposed location in Tavistock Place is a very essential one. It is sited on a major cycle route and is needed to maintain a maximum inter-station distance of 300 metres (e.g. between Cartwright Gardens and St Chads Street).
The proposed station in Taviton Street will be very useful as it is very close to UCL .
The hire station at the location in Theobalds Road is really essential – without it, there would be a severe shortage between Theobalds Road and the eastern end of High Holborn.
Both of the proposed sites in Warren Street will be very useful. If there’s a choice between the two, then the one closer to Tottenham Court Road has the advantage of being closer to a bust street.
