“We can’t turn the clock back. We know that if people want convenience, they’re going to shop online or go to their local neighbourhood store. So what we have to do is reimagine our city centres as places for people where we create the right outside spaces for people to socialise, where we give pedestrians priority, where we increase cycling facilities. And that means in all of our major cities — and cities like Newcastle which have been dominated by cars and vehicles for so long — really thinking completely differently about how we use the public space available. And that means we’ve got to move quickly to create good quality outside public spaces that people can enjoy and attract people in to provide a whole range of arts, cultural opportunities, leisure opportunities, events, the kinds of things that make city centres attractive places to come into.”
