Camden are consulting on installing the 4th and 5th mobility hubs in Somers Town. Phase 1 consists of three hubs on Goldington Crescent, Cranleigh Street and Charrington Street. Consultation on them is complete but a decision has not yet been made. See here for details of phase 1.
Phase 2 consists of hubs on Chalton Street and Doric Way. Like Phase 1, these would include
- Cycle parking and storage with (potentially) bike maintenance stations
- e-bike and scooter parking
- Streetscape improvements including seating, drinking water, planting and rain gardens
- New bike hangars
and would involve removing some visitor and residents’ parking bays.
The Chalton Street hub would also include a shared e-cargo bike (subject to finding someone to monitor and charge it) and the market area would be moved closer to the Euston Road.
The Doric Way scheme would include two-way cycling (already approved, see here, under Maria Fidelis) and improvements to the Eversholt Street junction (continuous footway, entry treatment for contraflow cycle lane, no-parking and no-loading zones extended). It would also include a car club bay and a new raised Zebra crossing.
Later phases are planned, see the Camden website.
This is a significant step in reducing car dominance of the streets and facilitating active travel modes and it would be good to see significant support.
