Great Russell Street Consultation

Camden are consulting on measures for Great Russell Street outside the British Museum. In the long term Camden has ambitions to pedestrianise this section but these are interim measures, mainly designed to improve the environment for visitors. Dates: Consultation: 22nd October to 12th November 2026; Reply to holbornln@camden.gov.uk; CCC member dealing with it: John Chamberlain.

The proposals include the following:

  • New uncontrolled pedestrian crossing at the mouth of Museum Street
  • New continuous pavement at mouth of Willoughby Street
  • Pavement widening on the north side of Great Russell Street, in place of parking bays
  • Relocation of Dockless Bike Hire Bay from the pavement at the southern end of Montague Street to increase space for pedestrians.
  • Double yellow lines at the southern end of Bedford Place
  • Additional cycle stands and seating

Initial Comments

  • Disappointed that the pedestrianisation won’t happen yet
  • Minor impact for cycling
  • Good to see parking removed in favour of pedestrians
